Hunting Practices

There are probably as many definitions of day hunting as there are hunters hunting.  Contrary Crek Ranch is not your ordinary day hunting operation.  That being said, our main goal is to be a steward of the land and all that it gives.  By maintaining this primary objective, we make available a genuine experience to multiple bowhunters.  Understand, the goals of Contrary Creek Ranch are long term. We are applying wildlife and range management principles, that will consistently provide our bow hunters with an improving hill country deer heard.

To insure the longterm integrity of our whitetail herd, our hunters are allowed only to harvest whitetail bucks 4.5 years of age or older.  There is no kill fee for a buck aging 4.5 years or older, but a penalty of $800 for bucks killed aging 3.5 years or younger.   We cannot stress enough that this is a penalty and not a kill fee.  It is in the best interest of the hunting community and the whitetail species to allow deer to reach maturity.

Contrary Creek Ranch is committed to ethical hunting standards. We do not allow our hunters to shoot any varmints or predators. One of the biggest challenges facing Hill Country deer management is over-population. Predators such as mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes and foxes all play an important role in maintaining a balanced and healthy ecosystem.
